The humble ukulele has sat on the back burner throughout most of Jazz music's rich history. Paul Hemmings is determined to change that.

With The Paul Hemmings Uketet, the unassuming four-stringed Hawaiian instrument takes its place front and center, alongside bass and drums, in a contemporary jazz combo that pushes the boundaries of what has often been considered a mere novelty instrument. Based in New York City, Paul and his Uketet have been winning over audiences at festivals and jazz clubs with their original twist on the instrumental jazz trio.

For the past ten years, Paul has also taught students of all ages at the Third Street Music School Settlement in New York City, the nation's oldest community music school. With a degree from the acclaimed jazz program at the New School University in Manhattan's Greenwich Village, he has conducted clinics, workshops, and master classes at festivals across the country (NY Uke Fest, Wine Country Ukulele Festival) and around the world (Cairns Ukulele Festival, Australia).

Paul will be teaching the following workshop:

Uke'n The Blues: Midnight Bl...uke
Beginning to intermediate levels

Kenny Burrell's 1963 album Midnight Blue is a masterpiece of Blues-inflected jazz guitar.  By exploring the music of this classic recording, this workshop will provide ukulele players with some simple techniques and an approach to soloing that will have their ukes singin' the Blues.
